Flat-pressed bamboo flooring, side-pressed bamboo flooring, or strand-woven bamboo flooring – which one should you choose?

Flat-pressed bamboo flooring, side-pressed bamboo flooring, or strand-woven bamboo flooring – which one should you choose?

2026-01-16

Due to the inherent characteristics of bamboo raw materials (single color, longitudinal direction of bamboo fibers), bamboo flooring has limited varieties, offering consumers a narrow range of choices.  The options are essentially flat-pressed bamboo flooring, side-pressed bamboo flooring, and strand-woven bamboo flooring. While the appearance and structure show clear differences, what about the internal quality? Let's analyze them to help you make the right decision when purchasing.

Flat-pressed bamboo flooring uses a horizontal combination method. Each bamboo strip is precisely cut, planed, and glued. Three layers are stacked parallel with the front side facing up, and then placed in a high-temperature press. Pressure is applied from both the front and sides to solidify the glue and form the flooring. The bamboo strips on the front of flat-pressed bamboo flooring are carefully selected and almost flawless, as the front surface is always visible and in contact with people daily. Any defects would be unsightly. However, the middle and back layers of flat-pressed bamboo flooring generally use lower-grade bamboo strips (for example, with noticeable color differences between strips, uneven edges, varying widths, or small holes). Because the back faces the ground, these defects do not affect the normal use of flat-pressed bamboo flooring or cause structural damage.

Side-pressed bamboo flooring uses a vertical combination method. Each treated bamboo strip is placed upright with the side facing upwards, as the side has the greatest load-bearing capacity. After gluing, it is placed in a press for shaping. Each bamboo strip in side-pressed bamboo flooring must be almost perfect, without any flaws, as these would directly affect the appearance. This requires very high-quality bamboo strips, resulting in greater material waste, more complex production processes, and stricter quality control requirements. The expansion and contraction of side-pressed bamboo flooring occur in the lateral direction, meaning the changes in size are only in the thickness direction. Therefore, it has excellent resistance to deformation and stability, and a unique texture, making it a superior type of bamboo flooring. The constituent unit of strand woven bamboo flooring is a network of bamboo bundles.  This is created by first separating the bamboo into long, interconnected, loose fibrous bundles while maintaining the original fiber arrangement.  These bundles are then dried, glued, formed into blanks, and then cold-pressed or hot-pressed into boards or other forms. The greatest characteristic of strand woven bamboo flooring is its full and rational utilization of the inherent properties of bamboo fiber material, ensuring both high utilization of bamboo and preservation of its original physical properties. Strand woven bamboo flooring maximizes the use of abundant bamboo resources, especially the large quantities of small-diameter, miscellaneous bamboo resources that have not yet been properly utilized. Its density and hardness are significantly higher than those of flat-pressed and side-pressed bamboo flooring, making it the pinnacle of bamboo flooring. It requires the most raw materials per plank, and therefore has the highest cost.

Regardless of whether it's flat-pressed, side-pressed, or strand woven bamboo flooring, all types are glued, but the adhesives used are imported, environmentally friendly, low-formaldehyde, and non-toxic. The bamboo strips undergo special harmless treatment to remove sugars, fats, starches, and proteins, ensuring that each plank does not delaminate, deform, or become infested with insects. The bamboo flooring is sealed on all six sides with high-quality imported wear-resistant paint, making it flame-retardant, wear-resistant, and mildew-proof, with a smooth and soft surface. The choice between flat-pressed, side-pressed, or strand woven bamboo flooring depends on each consumer's budget and quality requirements. Choose the most suitable option, not necessarily the most expensive. Flat-pressed bamboo flooring is suitable for areas with less activity (bedrooms), side-pressed bamboo flooring is suitable for children's rooms because of the many toys that can easily damage the surface, and strand woven bamboo flooring is suitable for areas with more activity, such as living rooms, as it is very wear-resistant.
